I don't think Johnny was truly a bad person at heart, Chozen was a sociopath on the other hand.

In the "Cobra Kai" TV Series they suggest that Johnny was just a part of the "wrong crowd"... and he felt like Daniel was trying to take his girl away from him, and Daniel did some bullying too.

If you watch the first couple of seasons, and then watch the first film again... You can kind of see that.

Either way, you can see that Johnny respects Daniel and the end of the tournament... A true bad person would not have done that.
