1. The Sixth Sense - 8/10…the reveal is great but the part that always gets me is when he tells his mom in the car, and he says grandma comes to visit and her answer is ‘every day’…and you find out the question was ‘do I make you proud.’ I always tear up there.
2. Unbreakable - 8/10…slow burn superhero flick. Shyamalan has a slow quiet style and to see that blend with non typical superhero stuff is something I enjoy and it’s different.
3. The Village - 7/10…I always felt the marketing ruined this movie for most people, at least at the time of release. It’s a ‘period piece’ romance with suspenseful elements…not a supernatural horror like the trailer implies. I thought the two leads were great. The twist was ok, not his best since it really seemed somewhat irrelevant to the story.
4. Split - 6/10…good, McAvoy kills it and I’m a big fan of Taylor-Joy and those big beautiful eyes.
5. The Visit - 5/10…I remember it being decent but the biggest part that sticks in my memory is the moms reaction via FaceTime when she says something like ‘But that’s not your grandparents.’
6. Glass - 5/10…could be higher but hated the ending. The final half hour ruins everything for me. I might even have it too high.
7. Signs - 5/10…never really got the love for this one. Shyamalans slow pace never pays off for me here and I’ve always just been bored by it.
8. The Happening - 4/10…gets points for some cool moments but the overall picture here is corny, forced and when all is said and done not all that fun to experience. Shoulda went full B movie vibe here.
9. Lady in the Water - 3/10…I like weird stuff but this one just felt like a mix and match of a dozen ideas all spewed out into one apartment complex. Didn’t like it.
10. The Last Airbender - 1/10…it’s not really the quality I’m criticizing here but rather the failure to even come remotely close to the greatness of the cartoon. I mean the storyboard is all there! All you have to do is not fuck it up and somehow…he fucked it up. The cartoon is amazing…if you feel yourself wondering about this movie, just go watch the cartoon. It will not disappoint you.
