I'd argue that's not what a household name is. A household name is a name famous enough that it's recognized in most households, but that doesn't mean everyone in the household knows who they are. Someone like Brad Pitt or Samuel L. Jackson are household names. Known by most households but not necessarily all people from all generations inside a household. If you're talking about names that are recognizable across multiple generations by pretty much everyone in the world, like Bruce Lee or Elvis Presley, then that’s no longer a household name. You're describing someone whose reached full iconic status and possibly even legendary status. That I agree with much more. I think we have mostly the same idea, I just think Scarlet Johansson was there first. She had a 9 year head start. She was in 12 movies before before Blunt. Lost in Translation, where she was a main character, came out the year of Emily Blunt's first movie.
Personally I wouldn't even put Jessica Biel or Kate Beckinsdale near them. Even now, I know Kate Beckinsdale for Pearl Harbor and at least one good Underworld movie. Jessica Biel, even less. 7th Heaven the TV show and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. I think she was in Texas Chainsaw Massacre; I remember the long shot of her ass in a commercial once.
Emily Blunt I had to go back for, because I didn't know who she was in The Devil Wears Prada. Looper is what made me start noticing her everywhere. Edge of Tomorrow sealed the deal.
To be fair, at the time of IM2, I'd consider Emily Blunt even less known than Scarjo. I agree with that. The main point I was making with Scarjo was that I don't think she could have made it this big if it wasn’t for the MCU. In my own opinion (only), she doesn't have either the talent or the charisma to consistently get high profile projects on her own if the MCU hadn't boosted her career. Blunt, though getting into the spotlight later than Scarjo, is more talented and would survive better on her own even without a massive franchise to back her up.
