I saw it when it was first released in theaters in 1973 when I was 10. And I think it was about twenty years before I realized that the police officer who confronts John was actually named "Holstein." For all that time, I thought that was early '60s slang for a cop, since most police cars were black and white, like Holstein cows (there were a lot of Holstein cows in my town at the time, before most were moved out to make way for McMansions).
After years of rewatching this film, I finally happened to notice the cop character's name listed in the end credits as Holstein.
