In that climax, when
they go into the ship to inject the white spikes, they blow the ship up as "plan b" when things don't go as they expected. Naturally, the female white spike got away, so they still got to make use of the remaining serum or whatever. But why wouldn't they just have blown the ship up from the start, killing all the aliens in one swoop?
Does it just come down to bad writing?
