Can an unattractive woman get a record deal nowadays?

Taylor Swift is doing quite well (officially skinny and ugly - I can't agree, but I'm a minority here))...and this whale...Adele (pretty face through).
And than there is this singer from Gossip who is almost as big as Adele.
