It's the first epic superhero movie and the first time a film director took this kind of source material seriously, the comic book in blockbuster format. As such, it's the ancestor of all the great (and not so great) superheroes movies that have followed in the ensuing decades.
I wouldn't agree that it's the best superhero overall though. Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (2006) (NOT the Richard Lester version) surpasses it as a Superman movie in my estimation and there are a handful of other superhero movies that rank higher for me.
