For me, this is very close..
True Grit 2010 is undeniably the best movie the Coen Brothers ever had a hand in, but that's because they did two things. They stayed true to the original classic, and when they added, they added based on historical credibility.
John Wayne, never known as a great actor, usually played roles that were comfortable for him, so it was no problem. This role may have been his best performance. In Searchers, Big Jake, Comancheros, he was being himself a lot. Here, he was portraying another character. Everyone performed well. When that happens, it's the director, editor, camera crew, and support people who actually are responsible.
Really hard to say. The 1969 looked more natural. The 2010 looked more like someone struggling to look natural. It's the difference between James Cagney doing himself, and Rich Little doing James Cagney. Most people will be pleased more by the showy mimic, but he also looks fake.
That's the cost of trying too hard to look natural instead of being natural.
TRUE GRIT 1969 9/10 TRUE GRIT 2010 8/10
