The original is extremely boring, the second is good until the cartoonish and predictable last 20 minutes and I haven't bothered with the third.
It sure did try.
The "found footage" gimmick really doesn't work for Cloverfield imo. It has worked for 2 movies - The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. In the latter it is done in a way where the cameras are just set up and so the characters don't look like idiots carrying the camera around everywhere. It doesn't feel forced in those 2 movies.
It also works in The Bay (2012), but I don't remember why it works so well there. It is done in a way where it makes you forget it is a found footage movie. That is one of the most intense and disturbing horror movies I have ever seen.
