They could have had humans being hunted by the predators--on a planet somewhere-and the humans find the aliens and get infected-and then the predators detect the aliens.
Having the aliens being the prisoners of the predators spoils it.
And they did it so the predators are more sympathetic--again--that wokeness ending in Predator 2 where the predators treat Danny Glover as a bro and a homie.
