Hey, guys, let's do an all black version of The Wizard of Oz!
We'll make it dark and depressing and hire Diana Ross as Dorothy. Who cares that she is twenty years too old for the part and has the vocal range of a squeeze toy. She's the hottest black singing star today.
On the plus side, the musical numbers have zest. Vintage Michael Jackson before he mutilated his face. Ted Ross is excellent singing I'm A Mean Old Lion and Mabel King fires up the action (what there is of it) with a scorching No Bad News.
I saw it in a theatre in '78. Gave it a second chance on tv some years ago and just couldn't make it through to the end. Major disappointment.
