1935 LA BANDERA - strong Foreign Legion tale with Gabin a killer on the run who joins to get fed!. Exciting climax as the Tuareg hordes close in..... Annabella gets top billing as his squeeze although she doesn't appear til half way through.
1997 - THE CHAMBERMAID ON THE TITANIC...a foundry worker, suspicious his wife has cuckolded him with his boss, invents a story of a lost love... and the audience for his tale of woe grows nightly. I could see the end coming but it was still a very satisfying view.
ARCHIMEDE LE CLOCHARD 1959 - I have seen Gabin on both sides of the law in policiers so often it was a bit of a shock to be reminded of his range. Here is a tramp railing against the indignities of life in this very funny comedy.
SUDDEN RAIN 1956 My first Naruse. A long dull Sunday together seems to magnify the stresses and tensions in a marriage. I'll be seeking out more.
QUIET DAYS IN CLICHY 1970 - Its so long since I read the book... but something about this worked for me. Two US expats screw their way round Europe. Sexually explicit (In truth some shots looked hard core) but it never once felt exploitative... and its kind of what Henry Miller demands! ....and the humour shone through. Country Joe & The Fish provide the score and bonus for jazz fans... the protagonists visit a jazz club where Ben Webster is playing saxophone .

I think my first Vaughn Monroe movie. The real star turns come from Victor Jory as the heavy and Henry Morgan. Morgan, who usually has to make much of little (dialogue as in OX BOW or screen time as in STATE FAIR) gets a juicy role as a coward thought killed who joins forces with Jory's gang.
