It's a marco26 reference, right? I remember this fellow from the old IMDb where I used to lurk. Funny guy. Precisely. The US beat Spain (then World Champions) in some minor tournament, or in a friendly, and Marco, ever the troll, latched on that to claim that the US was therefore the number 1 team in the world. Plenty of people fell for his trolling and argued in earnest about why that wasn't so. That was the Confederations Cup in South Africa in 2009 where Spain was ranked #1 in the world with a 35 game unbeaten streak that was broken by the U.S. in the Semi-finals. The Confederations Cup is no minor tournament! Every team that has won their Champions League title within their perspective Confederations: UEFA (Europe), CONCACAF (N. America), CONMEBOL (S.America), CAF (Africa), AFC (Asia), OFC (Oceana) qualifies for this tournement. The Confederations Cup is always held by the host nation 1 year before it hosts a World Cup. The U.S. went on to play the Final against Brazil by leading 2-0 by half time but then fell apart after Brazil scored and then continue to score in the second half beating the Americans 2-3. This is the closest the U.S. has ever gotten to winning anything at the highest level. And Spain still ranked #1 went on to win the World Cup the following year.
