It is more entertaining than the original and the remake, but much dumber. It is entertainingly bad imo.
It sort of works as OTT cheese in sections, but it also has a lot of stuff that is just idiotic. The movie has way too many writing problems. I consider The Evil Dead OTT cheese, but that movie is well-written and creepy while being cheese. Maybe the 2 sequels are better examples. They are OTT cheese and good at it, Amityville II isn't.
Of course the family is going to be more memorable when you make them all ridiculous. That isn't a good thing imo. \
For the record I am not big on cheesy 1980s horror, though there are exceptions.
