It sort of works as OTT cheese in sections, but it also has a lot of stuff that is just idiotic. The movie has way too many writing problems. I consider The Evil Dead OTT cheese, but that movie is well-written and creepy while being cheese. Maybe the 2 sequels are better examples. They are OTT cheese and good at it, Amityville II isn't. Of course the family is going to be more memorable when you make them all ridiculous. That isn't a good thing imo. \ For the record I am not big on cheesy 1980s horror, though there are exceptions. I enjoy the cheesy 80s material myself, so this movie was right up my alley. I certainly agree that the Evil Dead movies accomplish this with far greater skill, but that franchise is in a different league to the Amityville one, the most memorable aspect of which it the exterior look of the house itself. So you just like all cheesy '80s horror movies? I ask because this would be an example of a bad cheesy horror movie (imo), whereas Basket Case would be an example of good cheesy '80s horror movie. I would say I dislike the original Amityville Horror, the remake and the first sequel all equally. That is a first btw. That is to say they are all equally mediocre imo. I agree that the exterior of the house is easily the most memorable aspect of this franchise.
