If a gymnast or downhill skier starts losing what they need to do in midair, risking paralysis or death, who are we to say to suck it up and fix it? This is what it comes down to. I've officially done a 180 on this one. Taking herself out was actually the best decision she could've made under the circumstances. All of my previous comparisons don't really apply. If a QB is in his own head, he's going to miss some passes. This 4'8" dynamo is firing herself into the air, unsure of the outcome? Yeah, no. Also, I initially looked at it as her not wanting to embarrass herself, letting her ego get in the way. It was actually the opposite, her putting aside her ego and understanding that she had competent teammates who could pick up the slack. And they did-- they won silver in the team final and gold in the individual anyway. If Biles continued her meltdown the other night, it's likely the team doesn't medal at all, and she knew it. Some saw this immediately, but it took me some time to wrap my mind around stepping aside during a competition. Every person, every circumstance is unique, I see that now.
