On October 30th, 2019, the Washington Nationals won the first World Series in franchise history On July 29th, 2021, the Washington National were ripped apart, sentencing the team and fan to a dismal next couple seasons
What happened?
Well, some of it was inevitable. It was a veteran squad that couldn't be kept together. But why so fast? Simple, two pitchers, Patrick Corbin and Stephen Strasburg, are gathering 58,416,666 this season. And could pull in $247,000,000 in the future. And for what? Corbin is 6-9, 5.78 ERA, 1.468 WHIP. And Strasburg, don't ask. 1-2, 4.67 ERA and out for the year. Which brings me to my point. Why do GM give out these silly contracts? Mike Rizzo isn't he only one. Dave Dumbrowski tore up Chris Sale's contract and gave him a new one, even though it was obvious that is velocity was down in 2018. since 2018, Sale has thrown 147 innings and cashed check for a cool $60,000,000. it's obvious to us fans that pitchers now are as fragile as hothouse violets. Why throw silly money at "toys" hat will break soon? Could he Nats have kept Trea Turner, a 28 year old star, if they weren't shoveling money at Strasburg?
In the end, it's the DC fans who will pay
the nats were supposed to be raising payroll with them getting more tv fees b/c of the masn network brouhaha with the o's being resolved in the nat's favor...
