Spock never intended any resurrection. He just wanted to pass his Katra-soul back to Vulcan to be laid to rest. The novelization portrays that this was a usually safe possession for others but McCoy’s physiology caused it to become a unintended instability. Sarek thought Kirk had it, and didn’t seem concerned about Kirk acting healthy for one supposedly possessed.
