That fat woman from In The Line of Fire probably could have done the role too. Roseanne Barr? There's an early 70s tv-movie with a similar plot--Bradford Dillman and Shelley Winters.
There was a funny Oscars telecast where the sound department winner was going on and on and on--it seems to be a trait with the sound awards winners-they talk forever--and the camera cuts to Bates in the audience, frowning and shaking her head.
"Roseanne Barr?" GOOD GOD NO. Funny enough I think Katey Sagal from "Married With Children" (which was like an edgier version of "Roseanne") could have been a good casting choice, she played a pretty manipulative sociopath in "Sons of Anarchy" It's funny you laughed at his alternative but did the same thing he did only worse. Kathy Bates was perfect for the role because she was basically fat and desoery, Katey is too attractive to hold James Caan hostage in a bed. You typically have to look convincingly like garbage for the role which Kathy Bates did well. Roseanne as an alternative was actually better than yours, Katey playing a manipulative scheming matriarch is different to being an unhinged loner, you need to study different types of evil.
