Overall, Black Widow does a much better job with its characters. Yelena and Red Guardian were highlights. As was the family subplot. Nick Fury is only awesome because of Samuel L. There’s almost no character development for him in Captain Marvel. Both protagonists come off as boring though. Black Widow is outshined in her own movie because they don’t really give her much of an arc. Meanwhile Carol Dancers falls flat because her amnesia storyline severely limits character development. And ultimately both are used to service extremely blatant female empowerment themes that ironically reduce them to one dimensional avatars for a paper thin social message. Plot-wise Captain Marvel wins easily. The Skrulls and Kree provide a much more compelling backdrop then the Red Room. And the villains in Black Widow are easily among the worst in the MCU. So… I guess I’d call it a tie? To be fair, Red Guardian had zero character development as well. He added a lot of personality to the movie but he was pretty much there just for the laughs. I actually think that outside of their leads, CM managed their characters slightly better. Nick Fury, Yon-Rogg and Talos were overall a stronger supporting cast than Yelena, Red Guardian and Iron Maiden.
