The fire effects may never be bettered. The flames eat, breathe, whisper, crawl, advance and retract. Direction is note-perfect, with the action ignited at just the right times, the atmosphere lowered whenever necessary, and the controlled melodrama allowed to operate at Douglas Sirk level with only rare, select moments taken to fever pitch. The story deals with brotherhood, neighbourhood, community, solidarity, civic corruption and working class ethics. Tremendous ensemble cast drives it home (special shout out to Scott Glenn who risked his life hanging from a height on fire to pull off one crunch moment . An action masterpiece.
