The fifth and sixth series entries - the consensus view is that this are inferior entries - but I found much to enjoy in both. GOES HOME is a little longer than previous efforts - and set in suburbia - which does give it a different feel - and (at MGM's behest as unbridled drinking was deemed unpatriotic during wartime) Nick is off the sauce in this one - although nobody believes him. The business with the hammock and deckchair is a joy - and Myrna's jitterbug scene is for me a series highlight. Gloria DeHaven scores as a dramatic dramatic student. SONG has a jazz background - with Keenan Wynn's jive talking jazzman befuddling our tecs...plus Dean Stockwell as Nick Jr, Gloria Grahame, Don Taylor & Marie Windsor.
Followers of canine stardom please note how ephemeral that can be. In entry two Asta (played by Skippy) had his own plotline about a possibly illegitimate pup. In episodes 3 & 4 he got special "and Asta" billing after cast credits. By these last entries though his star had slipped - he was mentioned at the end of the regular cast in HOME rather than getting his own name filling a whole frame i.e.... by now Skippy was just another featured player.....and not mentioned at all on the credits of SONG - although in truth Skippy was not actually used in SONG - but a series of doubles. At the peak of his stardom Skippy employed a secretary to answer his fan mail and was paid $140 more pw than his trainer.
Star quality?
The Dude still abides .... umpteenth viewing of my favourite Coen.
FIRST VIEWINGS
Nothing I'd "recommend"
In the WATCHABLE/OF INTEREST category:
a 1983 American Playhouse adaptation of Nathanael West's MISS LONELYHEARTS
If you are looking for a big, dumb Friday night no brain action flic you could do much worse
Effective franchise entry:
Ladies to the fore in this one - Arnie doesn't even appear til half way through. Non stop action fest. No great Linda Hamilton fan but it was good to see a 63 year old woman who actually looks 63 playing the lead in a big bucks studio flic.
You can safely miss all the rest, which range from mediocre to very bad:
and STINKER OF THE WEEK award goes to
