From the classic era:
Barbara Stanwyck Betty Davis Flora Robson Ida Lupino
These are perfect. For me the question with Macbeth is who exactly is the driving force.? In the 2014 Kenneth Branagh version he was the driver with Alex Kingston as a strong partner supporting his plan. In many productions it is lady Macbeth who gens him up to do the deed which was suggested by the witch’s prophecy. Each of these ladies have played prime movers in a Scheme, Bette and Flora in their various outings as Queen Elizabeth, Stanwyck in Double Indemnity among many others, and Ida LUPINO in Ladies in Retirement for one.
To be Macbeth they need to have the suggestion made , then be encouraged to act, then to fall apart while her partner, more imaginative and sensitive , outwardly stays the course but inwardly crumbles. Olivia DeHavilland , based on her part in HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE is a perfect fit. Meryl Streep and Sally field would do this very well, Field egged on by James Garner or Paul Newman. Joanne Woodward would be great With Newman. For Meryl Why not Dustin Hoffman, or Diane Keaton as her partner.
