I believe the case was political. I mean, first Trump is elected President, then IMDb suddenly made a decision to shut the boards down on February 20th, one month after Trump's inauguration, and to pick President's Day of all possible days to disable them seems fishy. They could have waited until the end of the month.
I also believe that people involved in discussions for particular movies such as Ghostbusters (2016) didn't help in the least bit. The message behind the new film was driven by feminism, and it was pissing people off, so they took their opinions to the IMDb board.
That, and all of the rampant leftism floating around Hollyweird probably influenced Col Needham's decision to shutdown a board system that has been active since August 26th, 2002.
I can't really think of anything else that would cause them to remove it based off of what they claimed, especially since Amazon has their own forums for political discussions.
