Interesting survival film/jungle adventure/melodrama, Five Came Back (1939, dir. John Farrow). It’s a b, but the special effects are stellar, and director Farrow (Mia’s father) and cinematographer (and Lewton favorite) Nicholas Musuraca make every shot look great. (I just love RKO’s house style.) And what a cast: Chester Morris, Lucille Ball, C. Aubrey Smith, John Carradine, Joseph Calleia… I liked a lot of the movie, though the pacing seemed (unexpectedly to me) quicker in the plane sequences than in the jungle sequences. I did love the character changes, particularly Wendy Barrie’s, though I’m not sure in real life people would respond to this situation so well. The ending shocked me, and not totally in a good way; I’m surprised the Hays people allowed it, though maybe having Calleia shoot Prof. and Mrs. Smith (OK, Spengler), rather than having them shoot themselves, got around it. Still—cannibals!
