"The Godfather" is highly revered, but at the time it must been a huge risk for studios. Keep in mind:

Marlon Brando was a washed up has been
Al Pacino was a relative nobody (Coppolla had to fight the studio to get him cast)
Coppolla was mostly known for directing skin flicks prior to Godfather
