"The Godfather" is highly revered, but at the time it must been a huge risk for studios. Keep in mind: Marlon Brando was a washed up has been Al Pacino was a relative nobody (Coppolla had to fight the studio to get him cast) Coppolla was mostly known for directing skin flicks prior to Godfather Plus the fact that it was based on a pulp novel. It was a huge bestseller though, no? And crime movies were pretty big at the time.
