I remember thinking something along the line of "WOW, this guy is GOOD!"
River Phoenix Explorers (1985)
Same reaction with sad addition of "I want to see this kid grow up and play dads and grandfathers".
He was just so GOOD !
Adding another : Sam Waterston and Wm H Macy caught my attention in this TV movie from 1984.

I don't remember the story but I remember them. Thanks to the IMDb pages I was able to track down the title.
