Philip Roth developed a great deal during his career. I loved the novel American Pastoral, had no desire to see a movie based on it. The book's brilliance is in its writing. It's kind of like trying to adapt Scott Fitzgerald. These authors wrote novels that were too, hmm... novelistic to be successfully adapted into films. My biggest problem with American Pastoral was that it needed better editing. I felt that it fell just short of masterpiece for this reason. Where's Max Perkins when you need him? As to Philip Roth, he's come a long way since Portnoy. It's nice to see that this has been noticed. He's never quite got the praise from the critics that he deserved.
