My God, an entire side (side four) is unlistenable. Yep, totally agree. And instead of learning from this, they compounded their error on Sandinista! Not sure how you can call it a masterpiece when there's even more unlistenable dreck on there than on London Calling. OK, SANDINISTA is a masterpiece because it is bold. It dares to be great. Something that is long gone now in art. Artists used to dare, be brave, be audacious. Take a film like APOCALYPSE NOW. That film has many weaknesses (like SANDINISTA), but because it is so grand, so daring in scope and attempt, it is a remarkable, great work. A masterpiece...even with its failings. Will we ever see an APOCALYPSE NOW ever again? No friggin' way. Now everything is planned for maximum give-the-people-what-they-want. Who today would make a three album set with dub tunes, backward songs, little kids singing, hillbilly music next to rockers next to black gospel tunes....? SANDINISTA is a remarkable masterwork. It is Lean's LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, Joyce's ULYSSES, TS Eliot's "The Waste Land" all in one three album set...and for just $12.99! |
