Yes it was. He was asked repeatedly on public television to clarify his views, and despite doing his best to declare his passion as a Liberal Democrat about equality and equal LGTB rights and pointing out (correctly) that he was not obliged to make theological announcements, it clearly wasn't enough. He ended up being vilified on social media with various celebs crawling out of the woodwork to call him a fundamentalist Christian homophobe, intolerant, prejudiced, etc. And the guy didn't even say anything! I don't think the reaction could have been much different even if he said that homosexuality was deeply sinful and all gay people were going to burn in hell for eternity. And it was pretty obvious, I thought, that he doesn't think that.

If that's not a witch hunt, then what is?
