My list of 'favorite' athletes would not be the same as my list of 'greatest' athletes. Ditto for bands, authors, etc. LeBron James has to be one of the 10 best basketball players in history, but he's nowhere near my top 10 favorite players in history. See what I mean?
but... it's sports vs movies and i view sports players etc less open for interpretation on who's great than movies as movies are pretty much all personal opinion where as with say sports players for example, while it's still personal opinion to some degree, is less personal opinion oriented than movies are with the whole greatest/best thing. because there are less stuff to measure with movies where as with sports players you got more clear cut stuff to judge by like with winning etc.
but i guess if i was trying to separate 'favorite' and 'best' with movies... i would try to judge more by wide public opinion, especially over a wider range of age groups, more than critics and the like ways to measure as they are more concerned about 'ahead of their time' and other technical aspects where as with the wide public, that basically means majority opinion, and i would place that higher than critic opinion at the end of the day. i think this is pretty obvious given the types of movies critics would consider 'the greatest' vs what the wide public would consider the greatest etc (i know i don't have any exact list from the general wide public but it's pretty safe to say they would be quite different from one another overall. who knows, maybe IMDb is some sort of rough estimate of this as it's probably the best we got in terms of websites trying to gauge public opinion(?)). because if a movie is not all that known to many people (and getting them to like it to a higher degree) it can't be all that great to most people.
but it might be somewhat difficult to measure that stuff (wide public opinion, especially over a wide range of age groups) i suspect as while we always got theater $$$ to use on some level for measurement i think where it can get a bit harder to measure is the whole 'liked to a higher level by a wide range of age groups' type of thing as about all i could think of is maybe some places have rough estimates of what age groups watch certain TV channels etc. because there are some movies i suspect are liked by a wider range of age groups but even this is still mostly a guess. or maybe it's a combination of things like theater $$$/possibly how much people watch movies on TV etc/websites like IMDb etc.
but even with that whole high $$$ in the theaters thing... maybe i am wrong, but i would not be surprised if these are generally more skewed towards the young crowds. or maybe it's possibly because younger people tend to go to the theaters more often than older people(?).
with all of that said... you got me to accept the whole 'favorite' and 'best' thing a bit better than i did prior to talking to you. but still, when someone looks more at the technical aspects of movies it limits peoples choices as then lists are largely similar enough which is why i always prefer someones personal opinion on what they personally like the most as then your going to see much more variance then.
p.s. for the record... King Ego (i.e. Lebron James) is easily my least liked person in the NBA. whoever he plays i automatically go for the other team. but ill say this about him... he does not have that drive/will to win like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant has which is one thing working against King Ego. he seems to largely get by on his raw talent/sheer size where as Jordan/Bryant had more of a burning passion to win. for the record... Michael Jordan is my all time favorite NBA player.
Anyway I'm with you, Jordan was the best. LeBron seems so entitled he can't help himself. He's great, no denying it; and I don't hate him as much as I used to (he deserves a lot of credit for 2016). But I can't say I'll ever be a fan.
