That PT article I linked a while back went into the depth on the delicious sense of gratification and importance this sense of "inside the conspiracy" delivers. 

As a bonus, using events where kids are killed only helps generate extra outrage in response, helping feed that sense of martyrdom and persecution. "They're trying to silence us because we're on to it!".
