The French did take them seriously in 1918. In 1938 they didn't, which is why they allowed Germany back into the Ruhr. Whilst Germany was engaged in Poland, the French army could have smashed its way into Germany as there was virtually no German forces to oppose them.Unproven assumption. Or maybe because they knew more about warfare than you do.
