The French did take them seriously in 1918. In 1938 they didn't, which is why they allowed Germany back into the Ruhr. Whilst Germany was engaged in Poland, the French army could have smashed its way into Germany as there was virtually no German forces to oppose them.Unproven assumption. Or maybe because they knew more about warfare than you do. No it isn't. Hitler committed about half of the German army to the Polish front. This included the best equipped and battle ready divisions. The french army could have easily pushed through the weak 45 divisions on the Western Front with the 94 divisions it had in North East France. Would that be why they lost the war in about six weeks and never mounted a major offensive? Neither the French nor the British really grasped the danger that Hitler represented.
