Nice write-up. Of all the Batman films, "Returns" is definitely my favourite. Originally it was "Batman", but his follow up really grew on me. Would like to see Burton's Batman films on the big screen. Saw every other Batman film from "Forever" at the cinemas.
I always get a kick out of the gothic visuals of Gotham City, the surreal set-pieces, its dark nature and of course the larger than life villain performances in "Returns". Michael Keaton is perfect as Batman, a figure hard to read, and of course his soleman Bruce Wayne turn works because of his charm. Too bad this time, he's really overshadowed by his fellow cast members. Not due to his performance, but in what direction the material was heading. I remember reading something along the lines Burton found the villains more interesting. You can see.
