I've never heard anyone say they liked it more than the remake.

Actually, several of us were talking recently about the two films over on the CFB and many did prefer the other version. I almost said "the original" and caught myself just in the nick of time. It all had to do with character development and dialogue vs. Flash bang bleed swear.
Glad to hear that you have watched the earlier film. Many just reject it sight unseen.
