I remember first seeing this and the ‘gross’ parts certainly standing out. The nose-biting especially. I’m not sure if we’ll get another Batman movie as ‘full-on’ as this one was (at least not for a while).
The Penguin's death scene was pretty gross/nasty, specially the black/dark green goo that came out of his mouth during the last shot of him going into the water. The nose-bite part was brutal but even as a kid, I kind of found it to be funny, in a grotesque way, and the victim was such a sleazebag, I really could not feel much sorry for him.
The Penguin stuff in the movie didn’t interest me as much, and I found the people of Gotham City to be super annoying in their ‘mob mentality’ (ie. their reactions to The Penguin going from “Ew!” to “We LOVE The Penguin!” to “We HATE The Penguin!” so fast – they were almost as bad with The Joker in the first movie).
The whole mob/gang mentality seems to be a bit of a recurring part in a lot of Burton's film, and I agree that it was a bit silly how fast they went from hating on the guy, to treating him as one of their very own, but with three main villains on his hands, it was always gonna be a bit off here and there, story/plot wise that is.
I did love the fact that Batman was pretty merciless with the bad guys in this movie (like setting that one guy on fire with the Batmobile).
Yes, Keaton as Batman was one mean bastard, and while he was not as "dominant" as say, Bale or Affleck in a lot of the fight sequences in Burton's Batman films, he always seemed to back it up by being very nasty/cunning, with a devilish smile/could not care less attitude, especially when dealing with guys much bigger or stronger than him.
