Best sporting birthday you've ever had? No doubt about it for me. Euro 96. England 4 Holland 1. What a day that was. Everything came together, just on that day. In yer local. Sunny day. Place packed. Regulars and non-regulars. Gerry the landlord has no use for his Irish flag and has reluctantly dipped in the petty cash for a few St George's banners and decked out the place like only a cunning businessman could. I can't remember which of the four England goals it was but the place went predictably mad. I was by the bar. It went in. We went berserk. All I can recall is that there was a young lady near me (I remember she looked like a young Whitney Houston) and my flailing arms caught her glass. One of her ice cubes ended up in one of her slip-on shoes, which must have come loose from her foot in all the commotion. I'm like "I'm sorry, love!" She can't hear a fricking word I'm saying to her but her silent smile speaks volumes : "No problem, we're beating Holland!" What a fucking good day that was.
Today England have done the Dutch again, one-nothing after it looked for all the world like it was gonna be a stalemate. Brereton on '84, finishing off the loose ball after Ryan Sessignon's left-foot rocket took a deflection. England top the table with six points, Holland on three. It needs to be a much required win for Germany when they play Bulgaria later.
