I'm afraid if they did do away with pennies, then businesses would just round up to the nearest five cents on their products, i.e. $1.01 to $1.05. Four cents can make a difference to some people living on a budget. I don't see how that can be so. Very few goods are advertised as being just over a round number - things are far more likely to be advertised at 99c than $1.01, to put it in the "under a dollar" category in people's minds and make them more likely to buy it. If the 1c was scrapped it's more likely that some things would round up to an even dollar, or 5 dollars or whatever, whilst others would round down to the nearest 5c. It's madness to manufacture coins that cost more than double what they're worth.
