There is no real method. Reading about a show is more than enough to tell someone if they'll like it or not. I don't have to watch every show I've ever heard of to decide if I'm interested. Yes, any conversation with you is silly and meaningless.

I don't need first-hand knowledge to know the series jumped the shark when they decided every companion The Doctor ever had ended up as a Cyberman thanks to "Missy."
