PS: ...and of course a damn South American...dos Santos, Breno, Santa Cruz, Dante...didn't we have enough of these no show guys?!
And it's hardly a big risk to sign James on loan. He's not the "Granate" many expected (winner of the most overused and irritating word this summer), but I'm sure he'll add value to our squad from day one.
Remember how little creativity we had when Thiago was injured or having a bad game? With James, we'll have another player in our ranks that can shoulder this responsiblity. In any case, I'm willing to give him a chance before writing him off straight away.
And regarding the South Americans: Yes, those guys you mentioned were terrible transfers (you forgot Sosa
). But we also had guys like Jorginho, Elber, Paulo Sergio, Lucio and Pizarro...Plus, we had plenty of German no-shows over the years as well: Frings, Podolski, Götze, Schlaudraff, Rau, Jansen, Borowski, Görlitz, etc. - so no need to be so dismissive towards players from a certain country and much less from an entire continent.
Robben was and had always been out of our reach if it hadn't been for his fragile health. This was the reason why we had a chance to sign him at all: it was a huge bet on his future, and it paid more than off.
And like you said: it no risk, for it is worth nothing. Signing a player like Griezmann had been bold, had been a mark. Rodriguez, however, is cheap, no risk and he won't help us. Keep a screen-shot and talk to me after the season again. Maybe you're right, maybe not. And as for creativity: even Zidane wanted to get rid of him because with him the game has been to static - for me the anti-thesis of creative.
Last but not least: it not South American players per se, but this idea to sign "talents" for a small fee and turn them to big star and cash in big time...that was Uli's gambling projects before he went for his stock broker adventures. Neymar...that had been a signing.
And we had great South Americans, but they came for hard cash as full developed players (=> Lucio etc. pp.).
