I have a bird feeder, but I only keep bird feed in it Saturdays and Sundays. That's so that Monday through Friday they have to get their normal diet that probably includes insects harmful to trees. It is likely very safe to feed them all week. In order to impact the environment it would take a lot more than one person with one bird feeder and it would have to be all of a sudden. If it caught on slowly things would adjust and maintain balance. For example birds get a lot of food from parking lots where people discard food with other trash. Seagulls come to Richmond apparently for nothing but parking lot trash. That's only in the winter months though. That happened gradually though and so it got folded in to the normal balance. All sorts of birds (some of the same ones who visit me) frequent dumpsters that are supposed to be kept closed, but usually aren't. That also got folded in to the normal balance and is not a problem (except that dumpsters smell bad) for the balance of nature.
