Black Sails is one of the most under-appreciated shows of the last decade - A prequel to the classic tale Treasure Island while also taking influence from the likes of Breaking Bad, The Wire, Deadwood, and Game of Thrones with a bit of actual history but still being able to stand on its own two feet. Toby Stephens has been robbed not once but four times now for a nomination for Best Actor - Drama as Flint.
American Gods is just out of this world, visually amazing with good script writing and terrific acting from everyone, not just Ian McShane but also Orlando Jones, Gillian Anderson, Cloris Leachman, Peter Stormare, Pablo Schrieber, Kristen Chenoweth...Nobody, not even Dane Cook, did bad or lackluster work at all.
Black Sails wasted impressive locales and somehow managed to make pirates, sex and violence dull. American Gods should have been called Zombie Spinner Girl since it spent several pointless episodes detailing the minutia of a tiny dead reanimated wife. You sure you don't want to babble about how great the painfully bad shadow moon was?
Starz own Power looks brilliant by comparison to both shows and Power sure ain't brilliant. How many Emmys do you want to award 50 cent?
Black Sails expanded on the mythology and themes established in Treasure Island and turned it from a basic adventure story for adolescents into a very mature, complex story with respectable historical additions that enriched its setting. American Gods dealt with a whole lot more than Emily Browning's character. The guy playing Shadow Moon was adequate, good enough to be the audiences' perspective for the show.
I do not watch Power so I cannot comment.
