I remember watching this show as a kid, and now I'm seeing it again on AntennaTV. It's a good, funny, thoughtful show, but I can't understand how people as wise and compassionate as Jim and Margaret Anderson could have raised such loser kids as their three. Betty is a snob and the worst drama queen in TV history, Bud is an obnoxious jerk and a coward (when faced with an adversary, he always hides in the basement), and Kathy is nothing but a whining brat.
Still, there were some really good episodes. My favorite was "Short Wave" from Season 3. There, Bud picked up a distress call on his ham radio from a family whose boat was swamped in a hurricane. I was amazed at the compassion all the Andersons felt for these total strangers (even though the actors playing the Andersons provided the voices of the family in danger, LOL). After the Andersons were able to determine the latitude and longitude of the boat, Jim ran to the phone and called the Coast Guard, and there was eventually a successful rescue. Of course, with today's technology, this episode is dated, but the emotions could never be dated.
There was also an episode where Bud was so worried about his homing pigeon "Charlie" being able to fly home during a thunderstorm. Like "Short Wave", it shows a compassionate side of Bud that we rarely see.
