And even more than a nice guy, Tele -- he was a real quality standup guy. A recovering alcoholic, he devoted much of his later life helping others so afflicted, and used his fame by doing public service promos. Good to know! I've heard that alcohol nearly ruined his career. as it did for many actors and actresses before and after. An old movie guide said that his career was haltered becuse of health troubles, but that might then be a rewrite of the real troubles. In Johnny Reno 1966, he seems sometimes to have trouble with saying his lines, "as a drunk trying to sound sober", but it might have only been that all alcohol he drank before affected his voice. Being with Lon Chaney Jr can't have helped, since he was a famous alcoholic.
