That's not really news. There was at least one tribe of Canaanites that was in no danger at all back in the book of Joshua for being compliant.
The Canaanite plight was largely dependent on the Israelites desire to deal with them.
Throughout the OT, it is clear that Canaanites continued to give the Israelites grief.
So not sure when God's wrath and their extinction would enter into it.
What is true is they weren't terribly important on the world scheme of things which is why the modern world lost track of them even if the Bible did not.
