I think it has something to do with wanting something you don't have, or it could be you don't appreciate what you have and always want more. So I guess the idea of independence is more interesting for youths? :/ As much as many young people want independence, perhaps because it's what they don't have, many of them are not prepared for independence. Older people might usually be more conformist, but many WWII baby boomers are conforming in a way overly dependent on government. It's something many of them haven't yet noticed. They haven't seen the problems with that yet. I think in at least some of those cases it isn't a desire to conform. It's apathy. They just want to live out the rest of their lives with as little trouble as possible.
