As much as many young people want independence, perhaps because it's what they don't have, many of them are not prepared for independence. Older people might usually be more conformist, but many WWII baby boomers are conforming in a way overly dependent on government. It's something many of them haven't yet noticed. They haven't seen the problems with that yet. I think in at least some of those cases it isn't a desire to conform. It's apathy. They just want to live out the rest of their lives with as little trouble as possible. One thing about conformity that some people like (including myself) is that you don't have to bother with fashion. You just follow the simple rule. I'm terrible at picking out my clothes and just pick what the "uniform" is for my age/sex/station. Conformity contributes to the flow of society by helping out people like me.
