One group that is trying to put out films that go against the big budget blockbuster grain is A24 films. The three films I mentioned earlier, The VVitch, Swiss Army Man, and The Lobster, are all A24 products. If you are in the mood for something that isn't the cookie cutter film for mass consumption, I would start by looking at what's coming from them. Of course with films that aren't for the masses, there's a chance that you will REALLY LOVE or REALLY HATE the film. But that's the risk the lower budget films can take. They can go "out there" and be a little creative even when that vision really doesn't hit home for too many, it's not such a monetary loss. The VVitch is such a film, that IMHO, hit a home run with capturing an unsettling tone with it's Puritan morality tale of horror.
